The Cookie Wish

I had a secret wish. I wished for a big kitchen with an island, three bar stools, and a several tubes of icing. I wished for sprinkles and flour on brown faces. Giggles, happy smiles, and a pan full of cookie-cutter dough.

For whatever reason, I wished for a day to make Christmas cookies with the kids. I think it was all the subliminal messages I was getting from seeing pictures of finished cookie projects and gingerbread houses from my friends on Facebook. Maybe I thought it would somehow salvage a small part of the sacred Christmas traditions of the world; especially since we haven't observed any traditions this month.

Not a single one. I hadn't even read a Christmas book to them! I mean what kind of mother doesn't read her young children Christmas stories?!  So I read two to Elizabeth last night. We read, "Merry Christmas Mom and Dad and a storybook of the birth of Jesus. I added a few extras to that story. We were going to read "Cordoury's Christmas", but she got distracted by "Barbie and the Pink Shoes" thus ending our Christmas book selection.

I was beginning to wonder if my kids knew the real meaning of Christmas anymore!

They did. It's Jesus birthday, they said. Must have been from all the birthday parties for Jesus at church.

Whew!

Sunday afternoon, we were one of the last ones to leave as usual and Fay said she was having her nieces and nephews over the next to bake cookies and would we like to come!

What?! Am I dreaming? Ok! Sure!

We got to Fay's house at the same time the cookie cutters arrived! What timing! Breanna rolled out the dough and cut the cookies, like she had been doing all her life!  About 3 or 4 other families showed up and the baking commenced.

You know what comes next! The good part, icing and sprinkles. Elizabeth had a blast using the icing and sprinkles.  Of course, I sat and talked with  Allison and decorated cookies as if it was my life's calling.

Ben wasn't much for cooking, he ran outside with the dogs and chickens. They have a black rooster and at one point he chased Ben down! Attack of the rooster. For some reason, I found this extremely hilarious!

The cookie bake was a success. We came home with about 15 cookies, not including the ones we ate while we were there!

I guess some wishes do come true with the help of sweet friends, even  when they don't know it.

Merry Christmas!
