Therapy

The kids start play therapy tomorrow. Can you hear the bells ringing and the hallelujah's singing?

Brent and I went for our intake session last Thursday. To tell you how starved for conversation we are, we spilled our guts to this professional counselor for 2.5 hours! And we only stopped because she said she had enough info for their team. The counselor gave us curious looks and told us she admired us. We told her she shouldn't.

We mostly talked about Ben and Bre. We decided we wanted Elizabeth to be a little older before putting her in therapy. We told her about their past, as complicated and confusing as it is. We talked about school issues, emotional issues, attachment issues, sensory issues, behavior issues, eating, sleeping, and bathroom habits. I think the list goes on and on.

We also talked about our own personal issues and struggles. It's a good thing we didn't go in-depth in that conversation! I am sure we would have been there another 4 hours! One day I hope to articulate some of these struggles for you in a way that is understandable. Right now if I talk to you in person, I tend to talk in circles.

She told us some upcoming improvements at their facility that are really exciting and I hope we can take advantage of those and maybe help somehow in the new things that are forming.

We told the kids exactly what they were going to do. They are both excited. Breanna cannot wait to go to school because she gets checked out early tomorrow. Ben is excited about getting to play and learning early as well. I am glad they are looking forward to it. Even though none of us know exactly what to expect.

We hope that this will begin to help them heal and make sense of their life. Bringing children home to a forever family is just the first step in healing for adopted kids. There is so much deep inside and so much locked away that love and time cannot begin to break walls, until the walls are identified and they understand their life. Their brains are not wired like a "normal" child. Survival is their auto-pilot and they live out of the back of their brain. Synapses are not formed correctly and neurotransmitters are not functioning correctly. Hopefully this will be the beginning. Pray for them and for us.

Each session is recorded, so we will be able to view what is happening if we want. Which we do.

I just wanted to share the happy news of therapy. Hope your week is happy too!!
